Sterling Hop Profile

Sterling hop’s parentage is readily apparent in this dual purpose hop variety. Sterling is the daughter of Saaz and Cascade with some open pollination of German varieties. The spicy characteristics of the Saaz play well with the bright citrus from the Cascade. While it is primarily used as an aroma hop, it is versatile enough to work in a wide range of styles and uses.

Recommended Styles: Dry-Hopped Pils, Pale Ale, Lager, IPA
Pedigree Mostly Saaz and Cascade
Aroma Herbal, spicy, hint of floral-citrus
Alpha Acids* 6.0 – 12.0 %
Beta Acids 4.0 – 6.0 %
Cohumulone 22 – 28 % of alpha acids
Total Oil 1.3 – 1.9 ml/100g
Myrcene 44 – 48 % of total oil
Humulene 19 – 23 % of total oil
Caryophyllene 5 – 7 % of total oil
Farnesene 11 – 17 % of total oil

This blended varietal is half Saaz parentage with some Cascade, Brewer’s Gold, and Early Green hops thrown in. The result is a unique, dual purpose hop with wonderful aromatics and smooth bittering qualities. Sterling will generally have an alpha acid content between 4.5% and 9%.
The aroma presented is a combination of mild spice, citrus, and a floral bouquet that adds a nice touch to numerous beer styles.
